In-field demonstration program 2012
1. Forest establishment
2. Young stand tending
Pruning hardwood trees for quality improvement
Tending young stands on softwood dominated storm throw sites; presentation of treatment methods used in Baden-Württemberg
Schematic tending procedures in young softwood stands using brushcutters
Precision site preparation with a forestry mulcher
3. Low impact tree harvesting and energy wood production
3.1 Harvesting wood in level terrain
Mechanised thin soft wood harvesting with tracked harvester and combination harvester head; skidding with forwarder
Abtshagen hardwood procedure – motor-manual felling, yarding with horses, hauling with forwarder with rubber pads
Standing extraction with tracked harvester in high-structure spruce stands; hauling with forwarder (940 mm tyres)
Mechanised clearing of thick softwood on naturally regenerated sites using WoodMax tracked harvester; hauling with forwarder
Mechanised thick softwood harvesting on naturally regenerated sites using thick wood harvester in the 60 ton class
Low-impact motor-manual processing method for thick hardwood harvesting on vulnerable sites; hauling using an 8-wheel clam bunk skidder
3.2 Harvesting trees on slopes
Motor-manual thick hardwood harvesting on transitional terrain (30 to 50 % slope gradients) using a special forest tractor and traction winch
- Motor-manual thick hardwood harvesting on slopes: motor-manual felling; yarding and skidding with cable yarder; skidding with grapple skidder; motor-manual processing
3.3 Energy wood production
Generating optimum added value during the exploration and tending of softwood stands by bucking energy and industrial wood. Sorted felling and skidding using energy wood harwarder; chipping using remote-controlled trailer chipper or piling the industrial wood.
Creating exploitation lines for woodchip production in new, unexploited hardwood stands: felling and placing trees using a tracked excavator with Westtech bundler head; hauling trees to chipper with forwarder; chipping using a mounted wood chipper
3.4 Safe harvesting, special felling procedures
Thick hardwood arena: safe and damage-avoiding motor-manual wood harvesting in hardwood stands – work organisation and procedures
- Safe felling and processing of thick hardwood
- The escape route – my life insurance
- Using hydraulic felling devices professionally
Felling with a winch, made easy (methods for winch-supported wood harvesting)
- Successfully harvesting trees on sites with natural regeneration
- A case in dispute – harvesting trees in full leaf
Special felling procedures: Improving work safety by using a felling crane
4. Work safety, environmental compatibility, forest protection, logistics
Work safety: Container-grown plants – productivity, effort and body posture; in-depth analysis of two procedures for planting container-grown plants compared to planting conventionally grown seedlings.
Environmental compatibility and work safety: old and dead wood concept Baden-Württemberg
Environmental compatibility: the biomass/wood ash cycle and liming concepts for improving soil properties – strategy and operative implementation
Environmental compatibility: tree harvesting on slopes: minimising soil erosion by using traction winches
Environmental compatibility: Soil conservation and site adapted wood harvesting procedures – crucial recommendations from the State Forestry Office Brandenburg
Environmental compatibility: EFFICIENT20, EU-funded initiative, reducing fuel consumption in forest machine operations
Mechanical forest protection – necessary or dispensable part of forestry; protective measures in comparison
Forest protection : Root rot – damage prevention by fully mechanised stump treatment with biological preparations
Logistics: instruments of raw wood supply logistics (sScale-system,wet storage model, results from current research projects)
Logistics: QS Harvester using standardised control routines
Logistics: measuring wood piles using Visiosens - measuring device
