1. Site preparation

1.1 Site preparation: brushwood and residual wood clearing with a combimachine (bundler); shredding on a forest road using a slow-turning shredder
(Landesbetrieb Wald und Holz NRW)

1.2 Site preparation: point and strip mulching with a cutter dredge
(LFV Thüringen)

1.3 Site preparation with a Rotree Spot Cultivator attached to a tracked excavator
(LFV Thüringen)

1.4 Site preparation incl. stump removal
shredding on a forest road using a slow-turning shredder (see 1.1)
(AFL Niedersachsen)

1.5 Site preparation - Planting container plants using a planting head attached to an excavator or harvester boom
(AFL Niedersachsen)

1.6 Site preparation – tree planting in mulched strips using a PeinPlant planting machine (see 1.2)
(Landesbetrieb Wald und Holz NRW zusammen mit Fa. NFT GmbH)

2. Young stand management

2.1 Reafforestation strategies

a) The reafforestation concept following hurricane Kyrill (large and small area, with or without rejuvenation, high and low elevation; approx. 3 - 5 exemplary areas)
(Landesbetrieb Wald und Holz NRW; NRW-Forstverein)

b) The experiences after hurricane Lothar in the state of  Baden-Württemberg (planning alternatives on windthrow areas, consequences, evaluation)
(LFV Baden-Württemberg RP Freiburg)

3. Stand care/tree harvest incl. wood fuel production / Windthrow timber processing

3.1 Harvesting, processing and hauling wood in well-structured stands in  accessible terrains with special emphasis on sort diversity, protection of the stand, young trees and soil as well as cost balance.
(DVFFA Sektion Forsttechnik und ANW)

3.2 Mechanized tree harvesting in hardwood stands with special hardwood harvester heads, hauling with a forwarder
(TU Dresden)

3.3 Mechanized tree harvesting on accessible 35 - 50% slopes with the tracked harvester "Königstiger" and the steep-slope forwarder Forcar FC 200
(LFV Baden-Württemberg)

3.4 Mechanized tree harvesting ion accessible 35 - 50% slopes with the Highlander
(LFV Thüringen)

3.5 Harvesting trees in inaccessible terrain with the Valentini mobile yarder
(LFV Thüringen)

3.6 Wood fuel production - clearing access routes in hardwood stands with a Mecalac excavator equipped with a modified Habbig tree cutter. Sorting 3 m logs (industrial or fuel wood) and potential chipping wood on the skid road.  Hauling with a forwarder.
Also felling and hauling of problem trees up to 80 cm thick for traffic safety reasons along public roads using the PowerCut tracked excavator. Unloading tree crown and stem; hauling with a forwarder.
(Niedersächsische Landesforsten)

3.7 Wood fuel production - selective thinning of young hardwood stands with the Silvatec Felling-Collectinmg attachment. Sorting 3 m logs (industrial or fuel wood) and potential chipping wood on the skid road. Hauling with a forwarder.
(Niedersächsische Landesforsten)

3.8 Wood fuel production- Wood chip harvester PREUSS/Silvatec with felling/collecting attachjment
(LFV Brandenburg)

3.9 Mechanized thin wood harvesting targeted at maximizing industrial grade timber yield including a calculation for forest ownership as an alternative to wood fuel production; navigation and railway logistics
(Zellstoff Stendal Holz GmbH; Institut für Forstbenutzung und forstliche Arbeitswissenschaft Freiburg)

3.10 Wind-throw timber processing

  • Motor-manual delimbing aided by a forwarder  (work safety aspects,  cutting techniques, training); Using the Dyneema cable
    (HessenForst)
  • Mechanized wind-throw timber processing with a powerful tracked harvester
    (Landesbetrieb Wald und Holz NRW)

4. Wood logistics, information technology, management

4.1 The forest in virtual reality
(Landesbetrieb Wald und Holz NRW)

a) Biological production

b) Technical production: utilization of sensor technology; demonstration of a single-tree navigation system and subsequent logistics; timber harvesting simulation in the virtual forest / a decision making support tool for the technical production (simulation and calculation of key indices for planning; training tool for training logistic and economic correlations)

4.2 Data processing solutions for timber mobilization and logistics in forest associations in South Westfalia.
(Landesbetrieb Wald und Holz NRW)

4.3 Positioning system for forest machines
(TU Dresden, Fa. MOBA Mobile Automation, Fraunhofer IPMS, Fa. HSM)

4.4 Forwarder-braking test on level ground; using the results to calculate the maximum safe workling slope for the machine
(Institut f. Forstl. Arbeitswissenschaft und Verfahrenstechnologie Göttingen)

4.5 Test-Kit – Soil melioration by recycling tracks
(Uni Freiburg)

4.6 Camera based stack measurement (at 3.9)
